Chad and I would like to thank everyone for participating in last night's convivium. It was truly fantastic to see such a large and happy group of new and old faces!
There was a lot of stuff on the table, so I thought I would review it here so that everyone has a general sense of the events planned for the semester. Once the new website is live, you'll also be able to check there for updates.
1. If you would like your bio included on the website, shoot me an e-mail (if you haven't already done so) with your name, department, research interests, e-mail address, and a picture of yourself (optional).
2. A Professional Conversation with Dr. Emily Thornbury will take place on October 5th, at 12:30 -- This is going to be a great event and the only one like it this semester, so mark your calendars. More information will be sent out shortly.
3. Reading groups are the biggest part of GMB and it looks like there will be three this year. Information on each reading group will be sent out individually. If you have any questions in the meantime, please direct them to Chad, me, or any of the facilitators:
a. Paleography (Ben, Kate, and Pam)
b. Old English (Matt & Chad)
c. Latin (Kate and Jesse)
4. *(Re)new(ed)* research workshops -- We are bringing back the GMB workshops, which will allow graduate students to present their work and receive feedback from other graduate students. Tentatively, this semester we will have five meetings with the following students. All are welcome and encouraged to attend, even if you are not presenting this semester.
Andrea Lankin
Matthew Sergi
Benjamin Saltzman
Katie Malczyk
Molly Jacobs
There were several other ideas proposed and discussed at the meeting (Kalamazoo session, modern language reading groups, orals prep workshops, etc.). As these develop further, you'll certainly hear about them. In the meantime, this is going to be an awesome semester and we look forward to seeing you all again soon.
Cheers,
Ben and Chad
